Al-Kafi (Arabic: ٱلْكَافِي‎, al-Kāfī, literally "The Sufficient") is a Twelver Shia hadith collection compiled by Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni. It is divided into three sections: Usūl al-Kāfī, dealing with epistemology, theology, history, ethics, supplication, and the Qurʾān, Furūʿ al-Kāfī, which is concerned with practical and legal issues, and Rawdat (or Rauda) al-Kāfī, which includes miscellaneous traditions, many of which are lengthy letters and speeches transmitted from the Imāms.

The Book of Taharat (Cleansing)

Chapter 1

The Cleansing Quality of Water

H 3783, Ch. 1, h 1

Abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ya’qub al-Kulayniy (rh) has said that narrated to me Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Hashim from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy, who has said the following:

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Water cleanses but it is not cleanable.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya and others have narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan al-Lu’lu’iy through his chain of narrators has said the following:

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘All water is clean until it is found out that it is not clean.”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from abu Dawud al-Munshid from Ja’far ibn Muhammad from Yunus from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman who has said the following:

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, that all water (from source) is clean until it is found out that it is not clean.”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following:

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Is sea water clean?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is clean.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following:

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Is sea water clean?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is clean.’”


Chapter 2

The Quantity of Water that Always Remains Clean

H 3788, Ch. 2, h 1

Muhammad ibn `Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan ibn Yahya and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa all from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following:

“I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘If the quantity of water is one Kur, then things do not make it unclean.”’

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following:

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a water which dogs lick and in which animals urinate and people take baths after sexual activities. He (the Imam) said, ‘If its quantity is one Kur, then such things cannot make it unclean.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn `Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following:

“If the quantity of water is more than a Rawiyah, then it does not become unclean because of things falling in it, regardless of whether they have disintegrated or not, unless the smell of such things overwhelms the smell of water.”

H 3791, Ch. 2, h 4

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from al-Hassan ibn Salih al-Thawriy who has said the following:

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a quantity of water measures one Kur it does not become unclean.’ I then asked, ‘How much is the quantity of Kur?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Three and a half shibr in depth and three and a half in width.”’ (A Shibr is from the tip of thumb to the tip of the small finger with the palm spread open)

H 3792, Ch. 2, h 5

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa form ibn Muskan from abu Basir who has said the following:

“I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘How much is the quantity of one Kur of water?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘If the size of water is three and a half shibr by three and a half shibr, and three and a half shibr in its depth in the ground, then it is one Kur.’”

H 3793, Ch. 2, h 6

Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain persons of our people who has said the following:

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the quantity of one Kur of water is one thousand and two hundred ritl (a certain measurement).”

H 3794, Ch. 2, h 7

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Barqiy from ibn Sinan from `Isma‘il ibn Jabir who has said the following:

“I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the water which does not become unclean by anything. He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is one Kur.’ I then asked, ‘How much is one Kur?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is three shibr by three shibr in size.’”

H 3795, Ch. 2, h 8

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from certain persons of our people who has said the following:

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The quantity of one Kur of water is of the size of this Hubb (a water container).’ He pointed with his hand to one of those Hubb which are used in al-Madinah.”


Chapter 3

The Case of a Small Quantity of Water, the Water with a Dead Body in it and its use by a Man to Wash His Dirty Hand in it

H 3796, Ch. 3, h 1

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Kahiliy who has said the following:

“I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘If you find a small quantity of water, then take away some water from the right, left and in front of you, then take a Wudu.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from ibn Muskan who has said that Muhammad ibn al-Muyassir has said the following:

“I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘A man, after a sexual activity finds water on the way which is less than a Kur in quantity. He wants to take a bath but he does not have a bowl to pick up water with. His hands are dirty (but they are clean). What should he do?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He may place his hand in it to take Wudu’ (to wash) then he takes a bath. Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, has said, “He (Allah) has not made in religion anything that causes you hardships.’” (22:78)
